Mario Kart Wii

Our kid has been really good lately, so we decided to reward her with a video game. Every time we go into Best Buy she runs right for Mario Kart's Wii Wheel, so I figured it'd be a good thing to pick.
If you've played Mario Kart at all on the other consoles, then you know something along the lines of what to expect. The game doesn't really change the basics started all the way back on the SNES. Unlike the GC version, it does remove double carting, but that is largely it.
The game features 32 maps, 16 new, 16 old remakes. They've released some new features such as manual and automatic drifting, new baby forms of the characters, and bikes. (100 cc and 150 cc only) The bikes are different in that you can not drift boost them, but you can wheelie and get a boost from that. They also corner much better. Another new feature would be the jump tricks both bikes and karts can accomplish. Launch yourself and either push up, or move the Wiimote up quickly, and the character will do a trick. Provided you land correctly, you will then be given a quick boost.
The game sports many ways to control it as well. You can use the Wheel version of the controls, (place it in the wheel, or just hold a Wiimote sideways) the retro controller for the Wii, or your old standard GC controllers. I've seen reports of the wiimote not being as responsive, but I can't agree there just yet. Automatic mode, at least, seems made for the Wiimote form of playing. It will not give you the boosts though you'd need online where "snaking" is pulled off. I tried a little bit of manual with the wheel, and it seemed very iffy at first for me. I definatly need to try it some more.
I also must say I much prefer the "jerk" the wheel/mote method for tricks rather than pulling off the moves by pressing the D pad. It makes it feel a bit more interactive, especially for wheelies.
I need to obviously put in some more time with Mario Kart, but so far, its a blast. I plan to try out the online section soonish, but well, the Wii's online is just abysmal. It makes me sad to say that, but my DS Pokemon game's online is much more thought out than a lot of Wii game's online stuff. Bah. Other than that issue, its still really fun, and sometimes really cheap, to play against friends/family. Would have to say 7.5 out of 10 in terms of a rating.
