Wii Fit released to normal retail
May 21st 2008 14:02
The Fit was released last night at midnight for sales in normal retail. I note normal retail, because Nintendo's own stores have been allowed to sell it since Monday. As my post from last week mentioned, this was anticipated to be somewhat hard to find.
This would, as I found out last night, depend on where you decided to look. I live by Reading, PA and whereas a lot of games I've seen long lines for, the Walmart I hit had exactly 5 people at midnight. I got there at 11:20, and no one else showed up until around 11:40. Though, some who did show up were calling friends and telling horror stories.
One store in Reading itself had a two block long line. Some stores in Pottstown had lines wrapped around the building, some were taking names and getting tickets to hold to claim the store's stock. Not a single place around me for 50 miles had any pre-orders left, and many knew that their stock was completely sold out already.
The question over the next few weeks/months will be: Was it worth it?
The balance board seems pretty fun, and seems to measure pretty well. It starts off with Center of Balance, explains why balance is so important than then goes into the measuring. It even takes clothing weight into account. (Asks you to guess roughly how much weight it is.) I don't like that it bases everything upon BMI, but its a game and can't get all your vital stats. My BMI has said since I was a teen that I'm overweight. I had a pulse of 45 bpm, and rode a bike every day for 1 hour or more. Muscle weighs more than fat, therefore my mass being more muscle than fat was healthy mass.
Now, that's not so much the case and yes, I am a bit overweight. As such, it told me what a good target BMI was and lets you try and set various goals to lose weight. If you target more than 3 pounds in a 2 week period though it warns you that statistically, you're very likely to rebound those pounds.
After that, it tests your balancing skills and then gives you your Wii Fit age. (If you've played Brain Age, you've seen similar to this before) This was about where I had to quit out for bed, but if it plays similar to Brain Age, then you'll be given a bunch of games to play around with that prepare you for the daily testing, and get unlocked as you come back each day to do the testing. The games are such things as hoola hooping, snowboarding, tight rope walking. (Notice the focus on balance?) They all play out like WiiSports does as well, which should be a good thing since its what many rave over on the Wii as their first experience.
I'll give updates as I go along with it. (My goal is 20 lbs in 3 months currently) I really want to see how my wife does with the product since she's been wanting to get it for a while now.
