Wii Fit Update
May 23rd 2008 14:56
I'm almost done GTA IV, probably get the chance to do that this weekend, then I'll give my final impressions on it. For now though, I figured I'd post up a quick update on my experiences so far with the Fit.
So, how bout: OUCH
Its not that bad, unless you've largely been out of shape for a bit. Even if you are in shape, if you're not working all of the muscles in your body really, you may have some pain in store.
The game is broken down into Aerobics, Strength Training, Yoga and Balance Games.
After creating your profile, which I detailed in my last post, you are introduced to your piggy bank and the two trainer. The piggy bank stores minutes, which is basically your currency for the game. The more time in the bank, the more you unlock in the game, therefore they give you a rundown on your time spent on each exercise when you quit it. (generally 1-3 mins if you take the default reps)
They seem to unlock the new poses, routines and games in a static order. The first thing I unlocked for example was a new balance game and a yoga pose. (My wife got the same things)
I went for strength training right off. First started with Single Leg Extensions, they seem to base it on balance, since well, thats all that they can measure on the board. They even show you the balance and comment if you seem to have trouble.
Next I went to pushups with side stands. (I think that was the name) Thats where the pain started for me. The side stands, not so hard...but I've not done a push up in forever. (The back of my arms still hurt, and I did it two days ago now)
Finally I went for Twists. They have you bend your torso and waist to work the abdominals and lower back a bit. This didn't hurt me in the least but I could feel the stretching/tautness returning the next day. (great feeling btw)
I hit up the aerobics section and tried out the jogging portion which was amusing. I'm told there is a cheat there that if you see a dog run out past you, sprint past the trainer and follow the dog and you'll take a different route!
Then, since it was like 11ish at night, I went for some of the balance games to go off to bed. They have one game similar to monkey ball/marble madness that people will probably enjoy that requires using your balance to move balls into a hole. Tight rope walking I have yet to actually complete. (ugh) The slalom and ski jumps were fun though. Balance plays a part in just about all of them, and they include a scoreboard to challenge friends at beating you.
All told, it seems very enjoyable. I plan to try and do a bit each night or every other night if I can. So far the wife has been logging each night as well. Really want to see how the tracking and such is in the game.
